The College Press NIV Commentary Series is the only full commentary set in print from the Restoration Movement. Each volume (41 volumes for the Old & New Testament) contains the following helpful features: Biblically sound exegesis Clear exposition Objective approach Concise introduction New International Version of the Bible Key word translation Easy to use design format Practical footnotes And more! Philippians, Colossians, & Philemon: Dr. Ash brings a unique and refreshing approach to the next volume of the College Press NIV Commentary Series. His position as professor of Biblical Studies at Abilene Christian University has prepared him academically to write this next volume in the series, but his role as minister at Minter Lane Church of Christ has cultivated in him the need to write a practical and usable commentary. Philippians: There are a number of reasons why Paul wrote this letter. First, there was the matter of Epaphroditus and the gift sent to Paul by his hand. Paul wished to respond to their generosity. Second, he took the opportunity to share certain news about himself and his situation. Third, he wished to address a serious problem of division within the church. Fourth, Paul wished to warn about those he calls "dogs," "men who do evil," and "mutilators of the flesh" in 3:2. In addition to these central purposes there are certain themes sounded throughout the book which can be an enriching pursuit by the serious student. Colossians: Personal information is generally shared in letters like Colossians. This would be especially important because there would be concern over Paul's condition as a prisoner. But the troublesome teaching is the chief burden of the letter. Paul describes this heresy in 2:8, 16-23, and in the rest of the book he attacks it, either frontally or in more subtle ways. Philemon: This shortest of Paul's letters is similar to private correspondence of the day, but because of its inclusion in the New Testament and its skillful application of Christian principles, it is a very important letter for us.
