Journey of Hope: A Novel of Triumph and Heartbreak on the Oregon Trail in 1852
Three young women from different families and different backgrounds leave Independence, Missouri, in the spring of 1852 on a wagon train bound for the Oregon Territory. Sixteen-year-old Brenna is with her immigrant family who left famine and death behind in Ireland for the promise of a better life in America. Rebecca, the oldest of six children, travels with her farming family from Iowa. Emily, a young new bride, follows her husband and his wanderlust. They all will take advantage of the Donation Land Claim Act of 1850, offered by the U.S. government where married couples could claim 320 acres of land.
From the start, daily life on the wagon train is challenging. Cholera is rampant. Its cause is unknown and its victims die within 24 hours. Even though the overlanders form close ties with each other, there are always those wishing to profit from the misfortunes of others. Abel Brown is a handsome gambler, hiding his dark past in lies and deception. He plans to be a rich man when he gets to Oregon.
Accidents, disease, confrontations with native tribes, and disagreements with each other take their toll. Six months and 2000 miles later they reach Oregon City much changed from who they were when they started.
This is the story of one of the many wagon trains of 1852, and three young women whose hopes and fears are realized in unforgettable experiences of love and loss. Hearts are broken, pasts are mended, and truths are brought to light. Through it all, Brenna, Rebecca and Emily form a bond with each other that will last a lifetime.
