LIFE'S THIRD THIRD: It's About Time !
"Life’s Third Third" is about change and constancy, vulnerability and resilience, acceptance and perseverance. There are a lot of us now, shocked we are this old. How can it be, we wonder, that we are in our 60s, 70s and beyond? Aging into life’s Third Third should be no surprise. That does not mean it has to occur without much thought or self-exploration.
As I rounded the bend past 65 and officially became a “Senior Citizen,” I discovered I have a lot to say about this unique life chapter. Earlier in life, I assumed getting old might identify itself as a clear, distinct milestone. It might announce one morning over coffee, “I’m here, you’re old!” Instead, I seem to be sliding into it, hardly noticing the transition from one segment of the journey into the next. There is no boundary line, but once we are solidly inside the new territory, the markers reveal themselves.
Change is definitely afoot. Roles change, as do relationships with adult children and life partners. With more of life behind us than ahead, time takes center stage. We think differently about time— like a natural resource that is eroding, less left than ever before. We have no choice but to be intentional about how we use it. How we view and what we do with this last span of time varies as much as we each vary from one another; yet there are also many issues, challenges and observations we share.
"Life's Third Third" is a collection of writing and art. Each essay is a stand-alone flash narrative expressed in under 1000 words. That’s how a lifespan feels, like it gallops along in a flash. The illustrations are original collages. I would be thrilled for this book to serve as a springboard for thinking and talking about a passage of time we all experience but do not talk about enough.
