National Museum of the United States Air Force: A Pictorial of the Museum

This book is a pictorial tribute to the National Museum of the United States Air Force which traces its history back to 1923. It is also a tribute to the history of controlled, powered, and sustained flight which reaches back to the 1903 accomplishments of the Wright brothers of Dayton, Ohio. The National Museum of the United States Air Force fosters an interest in military aviation by presenting historical and educational exhibits that tell the story of the United States Air Force from the days of the Wright brothers to its role in world history today. By presenting the story of the Air Force to its many visitors, the National Museum of the United States Air Force also helps to develop a sense of national pride. This goal was underscored in the 1960s by the late Eugene W. Kettering, first chairman of the board of the Air Force Museum Foundation Inc., which has financed most of the construction of the current museum. Kettering “One of man’s most noble emotions is patriotism – a deeply sincere and reverent love for his country. Unfortunately, patriotism is not innate but must be taught to and learned by the individual”. Through this book we attempt to carry forward the goals envisioned for the National Museum of the United States Air Force by distinguished Americans. And as General Ira Eaker once wrote, “This book….is next best thing to visiting the Air Force Museum”. Thus, we encourage you to do just that in detail while the museum continues to commemorate what the Wright brothers accomplished for the nation and the world in 1903.
