The First Responders’ Peer Support Manual: Skills for Effective Conversations and Problem Solving

The First Responders’ Peer Support Manual: Skills for Effective Conversations and Problem Solving

The First Responders’ Peer Support Manual: Skills for Effective Conversations and Problem Solving

This manual is written as a "how to guide" for peer supporters in first responder organizations that need more training in basic helping skills. Peer support programs are becoming increasingly popular as we are identifying the need to prioritize the mental and physical health of our frontline workers. The peer support teams are carefully selected based on experience and interpersonal skills. Unfortunately, many peer supporters, though passionate about the cause, do not engage, and programs fizzle out. I believe one of the main reasons for that is that the peer supporters are not trained on basic therapeutic helping skills, and thus do not have the confidence to tackle hard situations, since they are expected to be able to help. This book very simply lays out basics in starting conversations, problem identification, assertive communication, and ways to support in the problem areas. There are worksheets included that the peer support can use in real time to help guide the process. Based on the problem area, there is an associated chapter covering things like relationships, parenting, anxiety, depression, PTSD, substance use, grief, and more. Each chapter will discuss signs that there may be a problem, appropriate ways you could help, and who to call when it is beyond your role as a peer support. It is my hope that through the use of this manual that more peer supporters will feel confident enough to start having conversations and ultimately that more peer support teams will thrive.
