THREE GOOD LEADS
THREE GOOD LEADSIn October 1918, newspapers had just one theme: The Great War in Europe. Americans were told to fear the enemy abroad, but “Spanish” influenza was about to take more lives in four months than the Great War took in four years. The trouble was, few people saw it coming. Donald Brown, an aspiring photojournalist, and Clara Barnes, a brilliant student nurse, are in the thick of it. Threatened by the area’s nascent mafia, Donald narrowly escapes death when he persists in warning the public about the coming pandemic before it overwhelms Houston, Texas. Meanwhile, in nearby Galveston, Clara and three other white nurses volunteer to run a makeshift extension of the Negro hospital to care for the excess of influenza victims. Although the protagonists are fictional, Three Good Leads is historically accurate in its depiction of the global influenza crisis as it peaked in Houston and Galveston in the fall of 1918.
