Titanic & Her Sisters Olympic & Britannic
In the early 21st century, over 100 years after her demise, the Titanic is the most notorious ship ever to have taken to the sea. Her tragic story has fascinated every generation from the time, even before her sinking, that every Victorian schoolboy could recite her colossal dimension by heart. More recently, James Cameronās 1997 movie, Titanic, grossed in excess of $1.8 billion, making it one of the biggest block-busters everāan indication of the extent to which she continues to capture the imaginations of people worldwide. It is less widely known that she was the second of the three vessels known as the āOlympicā class. Her sisters were the Olympic and the Britannic. Together, these were the largest and the most luxurious liners of their time, their sheer size giving an overwhelming feeling of safety and security. This was backed by the best traditions of British shipbuilding and the latest techniques of design and construction. However, only one of them, Olympic, was to have a full career and Britannic, just a year after entering service and despite many modiļ¬cations to further enhance safety after Titanicā; loss, sank after hitting a mine in a chilling echo of her sisterās fate. Titanic and Her Sisters is a deļ¬nitive account of these three beautiful ships and details their stories from the events that shaped their construction to the relatively recent Cameron movie and the salvage of artifacts from Titanicās wreck. Illustrated with over 500 pictures, many of them in full color, this collaboration of three writers, each of them who are noted for their expertise, is, perhaps, the most comprehensive work ever produced on the subject. A very large 9.25" x 12" format and 512 pages of fascinating text and hundreds of photos, well over 5 lbs / PRC Publishers, London 1998
